From Arabic قَيْس (qays), the verbal noun of قَاسَ (qāsa) "to measure, to compare".A famous bearer is Imru'-al-Qays (Imru’ al-Qays bin Hujr al-Kindi) d. 544, is sometimes considered the father of Arabic poetry.One notable fictional bearer of the name is Qays al-Mulawwah, the hero of the Arabic romantic folktale Laylā and Qays (also called Laylā and Majnūn - the latter name being a sobriquet for Qays).
