Meaning & History
From the name of the goddess Nyi Roro Kidul. Her name could mean "beautiful girl" (if the name is written as L/Rara Kidul) or "the sick one" (if the name is written as L/Roro Kidul). The term Nyi or Nyai is used as a term for a woman that is older than the caller. In the Sundanese folklore, she was believed to be the Queen of the South Sea.
