Meaning & History

Latinized form of Greek Ξοῦθος (Xouthos), possibly derived from ξουθός (xouthos) meaning "brown-yellow, tawny" or ξανθός (xanthos) "yellow, yellow-haired", or from στρουθός (strouthos) "sparrow". In Greek mythology Xuthus was a son of Hellen and Orseis, and founder (through his sons, Achaeus and Ion) of the Achaean and Ionian nations.
