Meaning & History

The name of a legendary king of the Britons, likely derived from the ancient Locrian people from the Central Greek region of Locris rather than having a Celtic source. This theory is supported by the fact that Locrinus had a father called Brutus of Troy, one of the most fanciful bits of romanticism found in Geoffrey of Monmouth's History of the British Kings. The desire to dovetail the ancient world of Troy and Greece with the founding of Britain has no bearing on our modern understanding of prehistoric and early British history.
