Possibly a combination of the literary Welsh word eilon meaning "deer, stag" and the suffix wy "river". This name was invented by Lloyd Alexander for use in his series 'The Chronicles of Prydain' (1964-1968); Princess Eilonwy also appears in the Disney film adaption of Alexander's novels, 'The Black Cauldron' (1985).
