Meaning & History

Latinized form of Greek Εὔβοια (Euboia), in which the first element is Greek εὖ (eu) meaning "good" and the second element is possibly derived from the Greek verb βοάω (boao) meaning "to shout, to proclaim" (also "to roar" and "to howl" when used of the wind; compare MELIBOEA and PERIBOEA). This was the name of several characters in Greek mythology. It also coincides with an ancient place name, belonging to an island located along the coast of Boeotia and Attica.
