Meaning & History

Possibly a variant of Anthea. This name was borne by a 2nd-century Illyrian saint who was martyred with her son Eleutherius during the persecutions of the Roman emperor Hadrian. It was also used by Xenophon of Ephesus for the lover of Habrocomes in his 2nd-century novel An Ephesian Tale (one of the sources for Shakespeare's äRomeo and Juliet).
