Meaning & History

Possibly derived from a combination of the root of Greek ἄσις (asis) meaning "mud, slime" and Proto-Indo-European *h₂ep- meaning "water". It has also been compared to the elements (asbolos) meaning "soot" and (ops) meaning "face, eye". This was the name of several river gods in Greek mythology.
