Hey, this is my name actually. Somewhere I still have the welsh baby names book my parents picked it from. It can actually be for a male or female. It's welsh in origin and it means 'Watcher', usually in the context of a guardian or caregiver. It's an interesting name, so far I've only ever met one other person outside of the UK with it so it's pretty uncommon in North America. I will try to add a reference to the book it's from if I can dig it up!- Eryl F.

Hey Satu...Where are you getting your meanings for Welsh names from?A while back you gave a meaning for Generys as well. I don't really study meaning, but I've not seen a meaning for the name in the endless philology I've had to read. :)Eryl's not an uncommon name in Wales amongst the over 40 age group, but it has no origin in the dictionary - I think it's from a place name, but I'd need to check a gazetteer.

Hey Merriment!Usually I have a look in my books to search for meanings and origins, sometimes (if I can't find anything) I search the internet. But there are tons of unreliable information there (even in books sometimes but not as often!), so I'm not always sure if the meanings given are right or not...The information about Eryl I found here:http://www.cfimages.com/Baby/Names/boyse.htmlNo idea if that's right or not! ;-)Regards, Satu
