Violet seems very trendy right now. It's trendy among educated people with pretty good taste, admittedly, but trendy nonetheless. Baby (toddler?) Violet Affleck didn't help matters, but I believe it was on the up before that ...
All in all, I think Valerie is quirkier and has a nicer sound.
