WDYTO Martha? The first Martha I ever met was about 9 or 10 years old, and I thought it was a really sweet name. Not very common. The discussion below about Tamar with the nn Mar reminded me of it. Do you think Martha could have the nn Mar, too? Could you see it on a little girl?

I actually really like the name Martha and believe it would be so gorgeous on a little girl these days. I don't like the nn Mar, nor have I ever met someone named Martha. Marta is nice too, but I still prefer Martha.

I really like Martha. I could totally see it on a little girl. :-) I like Marta, too, but I think Martha is easier to say. Some dialects would pronounce it like Marda. :-(

I love Martha and can easily picture it on a little girl, a three year old Martha lives down the street from me! I'm not fond of Mar as a nickname, I use mar as a noun fairly often and as a nickname, bothers me. I know a Marta my age (early 40's) who goes by Marty. While I like Marta, I dislike Marty and vastly prefer Martha.

I dislike Martha. It reminds me of "mat" and I think "doormat". It strikes me as dreary and frumpy.

I've never really liked Martha. It reminds me too much of Martha Stewart, who I've never liked. It's not a name I can easily picture on a little girl. The name almost always conjures up the image of a middle-aged woman. Probably the Martha Stewart association I have with the name, though. :-\
Marta, on the other hand, is absolutely lovely. I greatly prefer it to Martha. I think Mar would make a great nn for both Martha and Marta.

I like it okay, it feels clunky to me but I like that its uncommon and has a history. I think Mar works as a nn, but it seems like something you would call someone, before you ask them a question like
"Hey Mar?"
"Yeah?"
"What's a five letter word for joy?"
The nn just feels very informal, like a family pet name or something close friends would use not the everyday name that people would call her. I can see it on a little girl without any problems. I actually am seeing a girl in a red velvet dress and blonde ringlets getting ready for Christmas when I try to think of a little girl with the name.
I do like Marta better though. I find it fresh and sweet, plus it makes me think of The Sound Of Music, which I was obsessed with in elementary school.

I think Martha is adorable on a girl of any age. I like Martha NN Marty or Marta. Mar is an okay occational NN, but not something I would use on a daily basis.
