I have only heard Meara as as surname here in Ireland, never as a first name. It's said Mar-a. Generally speaking, I would not put much credence on the name of Irish characters in books. One of my favourite books has an 19th century Irish girl called Colleen in it - I cringe every time I read it.

Thanks! Yes I don't put much stock in the names in books either. They never seem authentic or even forgivable. This was set in the early 1900's.
