[Opinions] Salvador
I have been totally stuck on this name the past few days. It's formal and handsome; it's Spanish, like a lot of my favorites; and it doesn't sound like any other names. It also seems like a good candidate for an English-speaking family to use, like Diego or Joaquin. Let me note here that I am part Ecuadorian, and bilingual, but it's likely that my children will be raised primarily in English. One sticking point on Salvador: its literal meaning is "savior." Hmph--it does seem like a little much for, you know, non-saviors. Especially non-Catholic non-saviors, as my son would in all likelihood be. This makes it part of the group of Spanish names like Jesus or Angel that totally doesn't seem ripe for crossover to use among English-speakers. I do love the nn Sal, though. It seems like the name of a boy playing stickball out in the street. Very early 20th century urban "ethnic" name, like some of my other favorites (Francis nn Frank, Patrick nn Pat).So WDYT of:
- the name Salvador
- its meaning
- the nn SalAlso, I'm looking for combo ideas. I'm open to everything--any language, any popularity, any degree of trendiness or non-trendiness. I really like combos that seem mismatched but that somehow manage to work. It's hard to find a name that sounds good with Salvador that isn't also traditional and Spanish.

I like Salvador and the nickname Sal. I can understand why the meaning might be and turn off (what a huge expectation to put on a kid huh?), but I wouldn't worry too much about it. Unlike Jesus and Angel, which have literal meanings in English, savior is a translation of Salvador and not generally known to English speakers.

It has a nice sound, it's not a bad name, it's just entirely nms. It would be nice to see one someone else's child.I don't think you should let the meaning bother you. It has a positive meaning, and BtN offered no real religious connection, unless I'm completely missing something. It just means 'savior.' You don't have to involve religion. The nn Sal is good. I really like it....

I love it, but I prefer Salvatore. I like the nickname Sal; I knew one myself.
