I certainly don't regard Alys as a misspelling of Alice -- it's an established variant of the latter.

I don't think so. I think it looks trendy. Maybe that's just me but I think it's as bad as Jessyka. I've never known or heard of anyone named Alys so it is just some creative spelling of Alice to me and I don't think of it as an estalished variant at all. Elisabeth, Allison, Sofia and Hanna are established variants but not Alys.

Of course there were some girls named Alys in the past, even in the Middle Ages which doesn't change the fact that it looks misspelled to me. I mean yeah it has some history but even 400 years back there were people who couldn't spell (even more than now, I guess) or parents who were just being creative so it doesn't really mean anything,

It's the Welsh form, Lily. And I always think of Alys Pearsall Smith.
I think Alyssa is trendy (for Alicia) but not necessarily Alys for Alice.
