[Opinions] Maia/Maya
Opinions? Preferred spelling? HOw do you pronounce it?I'm liking Maia pronounced may-a, though I won't get it. My-a is just as fine, though. Started liking it because of a book set in Ancient Rome that I'm reading.

I Love Maia, but only Maia. Don't like Maya and really don't like Mya!
However I don't think I'll use it because of Maya and Mya's popularity...unfortunate. I pronounce them all the same, like My-uh.

MAH-yaI hate Maja, but I do like Maia and Maya. I think at the moment I prefer Maia. Maya makes me think of the tribe and then I can only think of uhm I can't write that down here. It's about how they sacrificed the lives of people to please their gods, and I can only think about HOW they did it and it's difficult to get the image out of your head.Maia pr. MAY-ah should be legit, as the original pronunciation of Gaia is GAY-ah. Just be aware of the fact that she'll have to correct people constantly.

I pronounce this MY-uh.I prefer the Maya spelling. For some reason, Maia seeems to me to lack substance.Had never heard the pronunciation MAY-uh, but I like it. Jonquil mentioned the combo Maya Celeste, which is absolutely beautiful. It has a good rhythm and feels solid. I love both names.

I love it!It's simple, elegant, belongs to many different cultures, who could ask for more? Both spellings are nice, though I'm leaning towards Maia myself.I'm not sure about the different prons. There aren't a million different ways to pronounce Maia or Maya, are there?

I prefer the Maya spelling and adore the combo Maya Celeste

I love it spelled Maia, pronounced MY-a. MAY-a just doesn't sound as pretty to me.

I like may-a, but I would only spell it Maea or maybe Mayha. Otherwise I say both Maia and Maya like My-a. I like it both ways- Maia makes me think "mother" because that was the root word of the name, and Maya makes me think of the Mayans.

I like it quite a bit. It is a name I always forget about actually. I prefer the spelling Maia and I pronounce it my-a but I like the may-a pronunciation just as much and if someone corrected me and told me it was may-a there would be no issue.

Maia is my favorite of the two. I pronounce them both as MYE-ah.

My cousin has a daughter called Maya (May-ah) and her name gets pronounced just fine.To be perfectly honest - Maya as My-ah seems silly.(I know the Mayan people are My-an, but the spelling suggests May-ah to me)

I like it best spelt Maya. I say MY-a for both, but I like MAY-a too, (although I wouldn't get that prn from Maia, it only makes sense with Maya and Maja, IMO).
This is one of those names that I quite like, but tend to forget about. There's a character called Maia on a show I watch who I don't like most of the time, so I tend to go off the name every now and then lol. It's also quite popular in NZ at the moment (don't know about where you are) which sort of puts me off it a little.

I *think* that may-a is the correct "Roman" pronunication for Maiaand my-a for Maya. DOn't ask me why.

You learn something new every day!I guess Maia makes more sense as 'my-a' to me because I speak a lot more Maori than I do 'Roman' (because I speak no 'Roman' lol), and the 'ai' vowel is always pronounced to rhyme with 'my'. Also, every Maia I've met is 'MY-a', so there's probably that influence too. And Maya looks like may + a, hence that assumption, I guess.

Yes, should beas the correct pronunciation of Gaia is GAY-ah. At least my professor told me so. Still I'd pronounce it GAH-yah, should I use it.

You're right about Maia, at least according to "classical" Latin pronunciation. It being a dead language the pronunciation rules are a little arbitrary. MY-a would be spelled Maea though.

I like Maia pronounced MAY-a, but I automatically pronounce it MY-a. I prefer the spelling Maia. Maya is nice too, but Maia looks prettier to me.
