Caroline's stunning...it's elegant, intelligent, sophisticated and refined. Carolyn is only an imitation of it.
I have heard Carly / Carlie being used for Carolyn. It's not my style...too cutesy--I'd just use Carolyn.
As for nicknames, I really don't think Caroline / Carolyn needs one. Callie and Carrie are pretty common, and you might be able to use Lee, Cara, Olive (?), or Rilla.
