Help[Opinions] Paul
This name has never appealed to me until recently. Now I'm really loving it. WDYT? I just think it really packs a punch in very few letters. Being the Papist I am, I love John Paul as a double name. I think I want to name a son this. Right now I'm loving the combo John Paul Augustine. Thoughts?

I've always thought that Paul was one of the very best one-syllable names; but John Paul is too papistical for me! Would you call him John Paul? Just John? Just Paul? I'd go for Paul Augustine John, actually!

I love the look and sound of Paul - clear and clean like Claire, and very handsome.

This will probably be what I name my son due soon. Like you, until recently I thought it was boring, but now I think it sort of stands out in its simplicity. I'm picking it mostly for family significance. Paul is used a lot in my family, but no one in my family goes by Paul. It is a middle name or in my grandfather's case, a silent first name.
Well there's family significance, and my husband vetoed all of my more colorful choices like Linus and Oscar. But maybe Linus and Oscar are trying too hard to be cool. My husband vetoed my first choice name for my daughter, Greta, and now I'm glad he did.
I do feel it needs a middle name with flair, but I'm using Robert because that's my husband's name. From an artistic standpoint, I much prefer Paul Augustus, Paul Xavier, and Paul Constantine.
I like how there are so many positive Paul namesakes, Paul Revere, Paul Newman, Paul McCartney, and more recently Paul Walker.

Oooh, we have very similar taste in names! I love love love Linus and Oscar, which is why I think maybe Paul sounds too boring, but not all my faves have to be colorful, right? I also love Greta, which is my niece's name (given name is Margaret, but she goes by Greta). I see you went with Fiona for your daughter, which is another name I love and my cat's name (I would have easily used it on a child, but a cat came first! :p)! I love the Paul combos you came up with, especially Paul Augustus. Paul Robert is a wonderful and strong name, and I think it will make a fine name for your son!

The name isn't something I could ever use due to a personal association - Paul is the husband of a close friend of mine - but I'd like to meet a little Paul. John isn't exciting enough on its own but John Paul or Jean-Paul would be lovely. It is serious yet warm sounding. Augustine is amazing.
Knowing that Genevieve is the name you plan to give to a future daughter, I'm going to come out and say that John Paul and Genevieve sound great together.

John Paul Augustine is good, but very "papist"... as in not neutral enough to name somebody IRL. If he grows up to be almost any other religion, it might be a little awkward (maybe that's just me, but it seems like it would be).

I've never cared for the name Paul, and unlike you, I haven't come to love it. I can't really give a concrete reason that I don't like it, the sound just doesn't appeal to me.
John is certainly an unobjectionable name, but for me it's like Mary or Jane. It has been so common for centuries, even if it's not highly popular now, that it has too generic an image for me.
My brother's name is John. He was named after his father, who was my mother's first husband. Even though it was evident that that's why he was given the name, my mother used to say that she liked John because it was a good, solid boy's name. I didn't dare say this to her face, but whenever she said that, I used to think, "Yeah, and boring as hell."
So John Paul is nothing that I would heartily endorse, but at least putting Augustine at the end of it would give it more personality.

Yeah, I do worry that John and Paul are kind of boring, especially if I were to use names like Genevieve and Penelope for girls (those are currently my 2 faves). So I don't know if I'd actually use it, but it still does appeal to me.

I was just thinking about it recently too. It's very friendly, nice guy. John Paul is a nice double first name, but it changes the feel of Paul for me just a little. John Paul Augustine is cool in a GP sort of way, but I think a little too Catholic history for one name.

I really like Ezra Paul, and Eben Paul. It works with a lot of the names I like, but as a middle name.
