[Opinions] Thomasina
I've been thinking about Thomasina lately, but I'm not sure if I like it or not. Basically, this is a "talk me into or out of" Thomasina post.

Oh I love this name! It's currently my top girls name. It may be a bit of a mouthful for a child but I still love it.

I kind of like, but don't really really like, the name Thomasina. This is really obscure, and so probably doesn't matter. But, just as an FYI, in the field of US gender history there are a few articles and chapters that discuss a historical personage in the colonial period called "Thomas/ Thomasine". If I recall correctly, the individual was of an ambiguous gender and passed at various times as male and female. Gender studies folks find this interesting because the community's attempts to figure out who and what Thomas(ine) was are interesting to folks who study the history of gender. I don't think anyone in the general public is privy to this fact or cares, but you might want to know that one of the more prominent Thomasine's in US history literature has this particular story.Honestly, that's all I can think of to talk you out of it. :p

I hadn't heard that before. This story interested me, so I looked it up. I'm surprised at the decision that the Virginia council made. They seem to be very forward thinking. I expected that if they couldn't come to a decision on gender they would just banish Thomas/Thomasine from their colony, but it seems they accepted him/her fairly well. I wonder if there are any earlier documented cases of transgendered individuals.

I love Thomasina! It's very elegant and stately, and it yields several nicknames that serve to combat accusations of pretentiousness (Tam, Tamsie, Tamsin, Tom, Tommie, Zena, etc.).
