The negative connotations are that in Greek mythology Pandora was the first mortal woman. Zeus gave her a box containing all of the troubles and ills that mankind now knows, and told her not to open it. Unfortunately her curiosity got the best of her and she opened it, unleashing the evil spirits into the world. (I took this from the listing of Pandora here, so you can look there for more info).

I saw the name Pandora used recently. The woman was a writer or something of that sort. I think of Pandora's Box when I hear the name but I still think that it's pretty and artistic sounding. I also like Annora, which is similar. I don't think that using Pandora would be any worse than when people use Eve (if you go by the stories). The stories of Eve and Pandora definitely have parallels.

Yes, the negative connotation immediately pops to mind. Other than Greek mythology, the only other time I've seen Pandora used is the title and main character of a Louise Brooks silent film. (Very risque' for the time.) Could I interest you in Persephone? The imagery might not be much better, but it's not as obvious as with Pandora.

I like the name Pandora. When I think of Pandora I do indeed think of the greek myth but in the myth Pandora was to be of supreme beauty and part godess. I think it would be a beautiful name on a little girl. I don't think of Pandora in the mythology as a negative but a positive. I really do like the name it is not common and it has a nice ring to it.

Didn't Pandora do the world some good as well? When I was little, I loved the story of Pandora. I could relate to her opening the box full of the world's ills, but more importantly, I loved her because in the version I had on a tape, at the very bottom of the box lay Hope--and I thought that she did the world good by bringing Hope into it. That could've been a little extra added in to nicen it up for the children, but when I hear the name, I still think of curiosity and hope, two qualities I would love for my children to possess.

Plus, in Jasper Fforde's Detective Jack Spratt Investigates books, Jack has a daughter named Pandora. She's currently dating Prometheus. :D

So overall, I absolutely love the name. I think it would be gorgeous for a child. Pandora Lucille Demars came to mind first, though I have to point out that Pandora Hope is the only combo I can stand the name Hope in--even if it's cheesey, ha. Since I don't know what names you like, I can't really suggest other ideas for you.
