I like it, and love Tolly as the nn too. I think it would sound cute on a boy, but imagining it on an adult does seem a tad pretentious. But not so much that I'd avoid using it. And also if the guy didn't act stuck-up, that would help. :)

I don't think it's close to Theodore at all, and if nicknames are similar it's not such a big deal.
