Even though they have a similar sound and overall feel, they're pretty different for me. Because Rowan makes me think of the tree, and Roan makes me think of the color. Specifically a horse or cow of that color. While I can see Rowan feeling more feminine, I think either are fine for either gender since they're a nature name and a color name. For a character, I'd just decide if he's more tree-y or livestock-y.
