I prefer Rowan, and I think it's fine for a boy.
FWIW, I pronounce Roan differently, one syllable instead of two, and I associated it with the horse color.

Yes, I pronounce Roan with one syllable as well.
Now that people are mentioning cows and horses that's all I can think of, too.
