[Opinions] it's for the birds...

Around here Raven is pretty strictly a name for black and Hispanic girls. The one Raven I know personally is Mexican.
It's also an overused device/name among emos and goths.
And it's very mid-nineties.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I actually only met one black Raven. I met one with blonde hair and one with red hair as well. Nameberry says 'it is mainly chosen by African Americans to celebrate the beauty of blackness', just like Ebony.

I'll go along with that...Except to add that as somebody else pointed out, it's a name that goth wannabe types like to give themselves. It's not as strongly a "black" name as Ebony though. In the US, a white girl named Ebony would really stick out. I'm told it's different in Australia and England.
Anyway, Ebony is not longer at all popular. It had its day in the eighties then it sank.

There was a white cashier named Raven at my workplace for a while. It got my attention because it was unusual, but I really liked it and thought it worked quite well.

Hmmm the only Ebony I knew was black but to me it was always a name that could work on anyone. But I thought the same about Raven. Maybe because the first one I met had red hair. But you are right about goth wannabes using it as their names. The only one that seems more common is Lilith. Oh and I heard they like to use Seraphina or Seraphine as well.
