In countries that were colonised by Europeans - in this case, I suppose, English-speakers - it wasn't uncommon for the native populations to convert to Christianity and / or adopt European names. So I think it is perfectly possible for an African person to have such a last name.

Africans do bear this surname Benedict, particularly in the country of Nigeria, as shown here http://ng.linkedin.com/pub/dir/+/BenedictI don't think, however, that this is an African American surname (african slaves and white slaveowners of the US). African American surnames are usually of English and French in origin, but this surname Benedict is of English and Dutch, ultimately of Latin origin, which is unlikely for African Americans to bear this surname. In the US, the majority of the people who bears this surname Benedict are White (Caucasians).
