[Opinions] Avril
Who finds that the singer Avril Lavigne puts them off of the name Avril? I most certainly don't! Avril Lavigne is an amazing singer and the name Avril suits her! Everyone who says Avril Lavigne is crap doesn't know anything. Maybe they heard one of her worse songs and decided against her but they don't have to hate her! So please, does she put you off of the name Avril? Thanx!

The name is fine, but I dislike the singer. Does that make the name less appealing to me? Probably, but so what? We all make name associations that influence how much we like or dislike a name.

I have nothing against Avril Lavigne (I hardly know anything about her, except that she's a singer). I think Avril is an OK name.

Eh, as far as the music goes it's just personal taste. She's not a favorite of mine but I do like a couple of her songs. She's the first association I have with the name, but it doesn't put me off at all.

I don't mind Avril Lavigne as a singer. I also like Madonna, Alanis Morrisette and Aretha Franklin, but would never use those names because yes, they're too associated with the singers, but primarily because I just don't like the names. Same goes for Avril.

I've heard of her, but never heard anything sung by her. So, no, my mild dislike of the name Avril has nothing to do with her and isn't even alleviated by the wonderful, sad and decadent Parisian 'Jane Avril' posters.

The singer is a non-entity to me as in when she became popular I was an adult who did not listen to pop music. i think I have heard two songs by her total. It wasn't my type of music. The singer does not put me off the name because I don't particularly like the sounds of it. I do like gravy boats though....

I like the name Avril, but not because of her.

It does put me off it a little, because I had never heard of the name until she was hyped. When I think of Avril Lavigne, I think of an auto-tuned vocal singing the usual pop lyrics, and deliberately sloppy black eyeliner on a young white face ... and that Hot Topicky, marketed-to-the-teen-set vibe does rub off on the name Avril a little bit.But the name is not that bad, if I can separate it from the shallow mass-marketed pop gimmicks (and Lavigne might not be that bad either, but I can't be bothered to separate her from the autotune and image marketing, to estimate whether she's talented or not). I would think it was a little phony for someone who didn't speak French to name a daughter Avril.

Great response!

It's just like Madonna at this point. Only one female singer comes to mind.

Madonna's been a mega-star for several decades, though, and her name's pretty rare. While Avril Lavigne is the first association I have with Avril, it's not as overwhelming to me as Madonna.

She doesn't really put me off of the name (I think she is an okay singer) but I do associate the name Avril with her.

You seem very defensive right off the bat, like you're assuming we all hate her and will therefore hate the name. Chill out, whatcha yelling for? Lay back. First off, I like Avril Lavigne well enough so she doesn't put me off the name. If anything, she's made me like the name a little. I don't think I'd ever use it though because the association is way too strong (especially where I'm from - Canada).

OT, but I think her better songs are the ones not released as singles. I don't think she is Joni Mitchell, but she does have *some* talent. I feel the same way about P!nk.

Completely agree. I have a couple of her early albums and she has some really good, slightly original songs (that of course didn't get radio play).

I agree. I think her first album was her best and some of her better songs never became hits. I really like the song "Naked". Just like every other artist who makes it big though, she kind of became too bubble-gum pop/punk/wtf. Got wrapped up in the fame and isn't as "natural" as she seemed when she first became famous. You're so right about P!nk...she has so many great songs and yet songs like "So What" and "Raise Your Glass" get all the air time. I thought "Beam Me Up" was going to make it to the radio but it didn't. Even "Glitter in the Air" didn't really become a hit, did it? Even though she sang it at the Grammys - what an amazing performance that was.

Nothing is more annoying than a mainstream artist insist up and down that they're not mainstream. If Avril Lavigne said, "Yeah, I make pop music, what's wrong with that?", I would like her more. Instead, she acts like she is a super serious rock artist and butchers System of a Down songs in concert. *sigh*I like P!nk more, but I agree that her personal songs are much, much better. "So What" is personal, but I like her sadder stuff. "Glitter In the Air" is very pretty.

Oh and...Now I'm getting way off topic lol, but add Katy Perry to that list. "Simple", "I'm Still Breathing"...

I like "Wide Awake", but that was released as a single. Don't know how well it did, though.

I love that song. I also love "E.T." and "Hot n Cold," but her other songs I've heard are just blah.

I used to be able to tolerate her, but now I really can't stand her. Now I'm just counting the minutes until she fades away.

"Wide Awake" must've done well because it seems to come on my radio at least once a day! haha. I'm not a huge fan of that one myself, but it's catchy enough.

To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the name to start with and the Avril Lavigne association certainly doesn't help. Her music really isn't my style (and I've heard most of her songs). Sorry.

I've long loved the name Avril and the singer doesn't put me off the name in the least. I've never heard her sing, but she's very pretty and the name does seem to suit her. I once came up with the combo Avril Sinead as a kind of "bad girls of rock and roll" combo. But the names are so soft and gentle next to each other. I like it on both levels. What do you think? :-)

Avril Sinead is really cool actually.
vote up1
Agree. I like it, too.

Thanks to both of you. :-)

No, she doesn't. I prefer April to Avril, though, but that's just because I don't like the French language (Avril is French for April).
vote up1
You don't like the French language as a whole?
vote up1
Er... well, in high school, I found it downright annoying. There are some French names I like, though, but in general, no, I don't like the language.

Why are you thinking about Avril Lavigne so much? First the Lounge, and now this post...seems kind of obsessive. To answer your question, I don't much care for the name itself, with or without the pop star. Sorry.

Maybe Avril Lavigne is her great aunt and she thinks of her whenever she makes gravy :)

LOL:)
