[Opinions] WDYTO Faith?
Cheesy or beautiful? Does it saddle a child with too much religious baggage, if they did not choose to be religious as their parents have? Any other thoughts? Combos?~Anna~

Buffy fan hereSo this is what I think of:
I don't really get a religious tone with Faith anymore than I do Hope or Grace.

DittoThough sometimes I think Faith sounds like... um... the name of a horse girl with a braid in a children's book, lol. But Faith Lehane is my first association. (And what a radical difference those two perceptions are!)

Like I said in my response, there are other ways to use the concept of "faith" but typically most use it in a religious context. For things religious people don't have answers for or are unknowable, they have 'faith'.Grace as a concept/virtue is used in a lot more contexts in everyday conversation- "she was graceful", "he handled that situation with grace" etc.Hope is obviously used way more than both of the above. We all hope for all sorts of things that aren't necessarily religious nor to they require any intervention from a higher power. But I also think of Faith from Buffy haha :) I think it's a pretty name, the public perception is what would cause me not to use it.

I think it's very pretty sounding and as a kid, it was one of my favorite girl's names. Now I'm an atheist so I would never use it and I associate it too much with "blind faith"- I don't think faith in itself is a negative thing and I do think you can have faith in things that are not religious. For example, I think it's a type of faith that I believe that the vast majority of people are basically good even though they may do bad things.Anyway, I think it is way too associated with very right-wing evangelical Christians and it is also to "in your face"-religious as a first name. As someone born into a religious family who became atheist, I'm glad that my first name is not Faith. I feel the same way about Christian for a boy too. I think it makes a nice middle name a lot of the time though.

I'm not very fond of it, but it's not because I'm not religious, it's because I don't really like the sound. The "th" sound isn't found in Swedish (they have it in Icelandic, though), so when I say it, I think it sounds like I'm saying "face" with a lisp. I'm more fond of Hope and Verity. But Faith could be a cute mn.

I think it's a beautiful idea, but unfortunately I don't find the word itself beautiful to use as a name.I don't feel it's overwhelmingly religious.

I've known of people who were not particularly religious using Faith. It's usually because they thought they would never have kids, so they kept faith that one day, they would. Cheesy, but if it means something to them, it's fine.Personally, I think it's a little too predictable. It doesn't do much for me as a name, there is zero 'wow' factor. I would avoid it just for that reason.

It's a nice name, but a bit cliched now in the way that Grace is. I don't think having the name Faith by itself would saddle anybody with religious connotations, unless they decided to throw a pity party for themselves and attach more weight to the name than it carries. It would be their upbringing and environment that would be the main factors in influencing any religious or anti-religious feelings, much more so than the name.Allison Faith or Faith AllisonLauren FaithFaith EllenDiana Faith or Faith Diana

I wouldn't call it cheesy or beautiful. It's short and un-frilly, and fairly nice on the people I've met with it. It does sound a little like 'face' with a lisp though, and might be hard for small kids to say.
I wouldn't assume any religious baggage, but I don't live in a very religious country and only one of the multiple people with the name who I've met had it for those reasons.

I think it's a great name. I don't see it as cheesy at all and not too much for a child imo. I do prefer it for a mn though, it works with so many names that way.

It does not signify appealing things for me. It seems big-haired and blue eyeshadow and televangelist while simultaneously seeming 20 kids, Utah-compound polygamist.

LOL the first one was my concern.

I think its overused and boring, but not cheesy or beautiful unless used in certain instances such as when preemies are born and named Miracle or Angel.
I think it definitely is religious and I cannot imagine anyone who isn't Christian using the name.P.S. I understand what you're trying to use with the phrase "baggage" but its pretty offensive for someone of a faith to be told their belief is "baggage."

Gracie IS religious, so...

I would say that's probably true that some people would find it offensive, even if you don't. Words are definitely politically correct or not nowadays and I would say that terminology is not a "nice" way to describe religion, or anything really. Sometimes people have a hard time finding the word they are looking for, and I imagine Gracie wouldn't want to offend her or any other religion by calling it "baggage."

Yeah... I might could work on my phrasing, and if I think of something better will change it, but I'm concerned about if it seems fundementalist given my location, and that's what I meant by baggage.

Its just people are often bigoted against people who are religious and the term "baggage" is a negative term. I've never heard it used in a positive light. Perhaps 'connotations' would be a better term.

For what it's worth, I am religious and I don't find your usage of the term baggage offensive. I think it's considerate to think that if your child grows up to be atheist, they might not want a typically religion-associated name.

Well, also if they're a moderate Christian or a Catholic if people will make assumptions about them being angry right wing evangelical Christians.

Yup

I must admit, the only Faith I've known is the daughter of very religious fundamental Christian parents.

I don't think I've ever met a Faith, but I would definitely assume they're religious on some level.

You can't decide what is and isn't offensive to someone.

Pretty in theory.Way too much religious baggage.

I think it's beautiful sounding, but too religious sounding for me to use personally.

It's pretty but I do think it's too overtly religious. It's fine if you are religious, but I don't find it suitable for the irreligious.

I like it, and I don't think it's too religious. I think it's like Christian, TBH.

It's pretty. You can have faith in many things besides a religion.

I like it and it feels fresh among trendy names. Beautiful!
