[Facts] Re: Irish Mac- surnames
in reply to a message by lac
Gaelic surnames beginning with Mac- means "son" so any surname beginning with Mac- usually refers to the son of etc., etc. I don't know if there are any Irish surnames that derived from a woman's name- usually names come from the name of the father, an ancestor, or as an occupational name or a nickname for a particular characteristic (hair, color, complexion, facial feature). However, Ní/Nic is used to refer to women (ex. BrigidPádraig- Brigid daughter of Patrick), if that helps.“Ideals are like stars; you will not succeed in touching with your hands. But like the seafaring man on the desert of waters, you choose them as your guides, and following them you will reach your destiny.”
