Dara is a feminine Hebrew name meaning "wisdom". It was one of my ancestresses' "Jewish" name. I like it!

It doesn't really bear any resemblance to Dorothy, apart from beginning with a D. I like Dara or Daragh on a boy. Although it's an Irish boys' name, and a popular one in Ireland itself, I do know a girl named Darragh (just pron. DA-ra) whose family is Irish. Her siblings are Michael, Jack and Orla. OK I'm off on a tangent now ...

Reminds me of Sara, so I'd pronounce it Dare-uh. Am I right? I like Dara, and I think if you want it to honor your mom, that is all that matters. I think it is pretty, and a nice alternative to Dorothy, which sounds a bit dated, and to Dora, which, although I think is very pretty, has been ruined by Dora the Explorer at the present time.

Things I think of:
Dara has been a fairly popular name for a boy in Ireland recently, I noticed. I'm not sure how they say it.
Dara's the name of a woman about my own age I know, whose name is pronounced DAIR-a. I'd never heard it before I met her.So with my minimal exposure to the name, I'm tending to think of it as ambiguous like Dana is, and on a girl it could be DAIRa..I'd like it better, actually, as DAHra on a girl. I was always mispronouncing DAIRa's name that way, since it looks more like DAHra to me. Although it doesn't share an origin with the name Dorothy, it sounds close enough that if you consider it honors your mom, then it does. Especially if your mom went by Dora.If my mom told me she'd chosen my name in honor of her mother, I wouldn't care much if it didn't mean the same or sound exactly the same. All that would matter would be that my mom meant for it to honor my grandmother. - chazda

Pronunciation of Dara ...With a Celtic accent, there isn't that choice between a long "ah" sound and a short "a" one: DA-ra is just that. (Accents are so difficult to explain!) With a US accent, you could render it as either ... I imagine people would just go by however they say Sara, Lara, Tara and Mara, and keep on rhyming ;-)

Dara is a nice name, but Dora is a little more fitting to honor someone named Dorothy.
