As far as why it's not popular now - I'm in the US and it never seems to have crossed the Atlantic.

I've always thought it sounded far too close to Brian, which is a name I rather detest.

Due to the pronunciation I hear "Briany" as if there was an adjective describing guys named Brian.

I used to prefer the Briony spelling because I didn't like the two Ys being pronounced differently, but this spelling is growing on me.

That said... it reminds me too much of "brine-y" for me to ever use it.

I really really like Bryony! For me personally, I think it's beautiful and sounds very pleasant to my ears. I think it's popular amongst British women.

It’s not a bad name, per-say. However, I personally prefer the name Brianna to Bryony. I don’t know why it isn’t popular here, considering how popular Brianna used to be.

Another note that doesn’t affect my opinion: Bryony reminds me of the term “Brony”. A “Brony” is a term used to describe a male fan of “My Little Pony”.

Probably the least floral flower name there is; as such, and because I like Brian, I'm very fond of Bryony (this spelling, for choice) and would consider using it as a fn or mn. It's never been really popular in South Africa as far as I can tell, though we don't keep stats so it's hard to say.

I like it, but I prefer Briony more

I like Bryony and I wold consider it as a middle name. I did know a handful growing up and it was moderately popular here in the UK for a while. It has a lovely, rhythmic sound and packs a light punch.

I kinda like the name. I’m one of those people who cares about meanings, and once I looked up the meaning and didn’t like it (can’t remember off the top of my head), so I took it off a potential name list. However, because it sounds so close to “Brian/Bryan,” I’m surprised it’s not more popular for those that like a more gender neutral sounding name.
