Help[Opinions] WDYTO Diamond
I’m a huge fan of most gemstone names. Diamond is one I was never super into but it has been growing on me. This site lists it as a African American name. Do you think it would sound out of place on a white person?

I had a friend at uni whose ln was Diamond, so to me it's both a lnfn (which I dislike) and a jewel name (which I dislike). I've never encountered it used as a fn. For what it's worth, he is white and a Jew; of course we don't have African Americans in Africa.

I think it sounds out of place on a human being. The connotation with diamonds, to me, is conspicuous consumption and that's an uncomfortable thing to name a child after.
Generally-speaking, I think words for gemstones are out of place on human beings. Amber, Pearl, and Opal are fine, but dated, and exist outside of its association with gemstones. Amethyst, Sapphire, Emerald, Topaz...? Ick.

I like it. As a gal name.
I think that a lot of white people in the US would be surprised it was a white person (esp if a guy!), but that's not exactly saying it seems out of place... It's just one of those names where I think white people wouldn't necessarily picture it on a white gal by default, lol. It's not one of the names that strikes me as being in a distinctively "black style" though.
+ Also to me the connotation isn't bling, it's durability, and just the natural perfection of crystals.

Diamond has never really caught my eye as a name, I think I might’ve known one in the past, but it wasn’t a remarkable name or anything. Diamonds are precious stones, but the name itself just feels a tad tacky to me. Like almost materialistic. I can’t really see it in a professional setting as a name but somehow at the same time I can. Diamond doesn’t have the attractive, elegant, and boldness compared to Ruby, the quiet familiarity of Pearl where it’s beautiful, but not too flashy and just pure. The unusualness of Emerald, or the soft, humble, and refreshing coolness of Garnet or Peridot. I like most nature names, but this ain’t it. Basically, Diamond just feels like it’s doing too much. Like trying to be something it’s not. Diamonds are overrated rocks anyways.
On the last part - I am not an African-American but I am a black American and I have seen some people with names like this. I have the firm belief that really any name can fit any type of person, so no; I don’t think it would be weird on a white person.
On the brighter side, Diamond is clear, somewhat pretty, and I think of that song “We’re beautiful like Diamonds in the sky! Shine bright like a Diamond!”

I dislike it on anyone, honestly, regardless of skin tone. Unless someone is a, and sorry to be the one to say this, a stripper, it just doesn't really work. It's okay as a pet's name though! I've met a few (both dogs and cats) and even had a cat for nearly 16 years named this. So it does hold some sentiment for me, just not as a human name. Well, maybe as a surname.

Have only ever seen it as a surname, can't really get behind it as a given name.
