Generally speaking, I don't like spondees. I much prefer Irene, 3 syllables, to I-REEN. If I used it, it would only be as a mn, because of those pronunciation issues. Perhaps Irina could work?

I like it better with three syllables as well. I always liked hearing my grandma say my aunt’s name (spelled Irene) “Ee-ray-na” with a very soft, almost rolled R. Unfortunately you probably wouldn’t get that pronunciation with Irina either.

Irene is gorgeous and peaceful. I don’t see why one should dislike it. I always loved it really, it’s in my PNL list. I find the 3 syllable pronunciation unpleasant.I also don’t find it old-fashioned or old lady like. Irene is mature, and it lasts a lifetime.
