[Opinions] WDYT of Katana?
A family friend had her daughter this morning and the boyfriend has now suggested this name? I cringed, but won't be telling the mother my opinion.

I knew of someone with a daughter named Katana...(m)My old dance/sing/theater teacher and her husband had a daughter named Katana. I think it's actually quite pretty, but I would never use it.

It's like naming her Sword to meNaturally, it's nmsaa just for that reason.Another thing is that it's a Japanese name. I fear Japanese names will be the next Big Ethnic Name Trend, a la today's Gaelic Names trend. And we all know how Gaelic names have been tortured and butchered by that... So I'm wary of Japanese names on anybody but a child who actually has Japanese heritage. Maybe I'm just being overly cautious, but I'd rather have a "better safe than sorry" approach to this, for the names' sakes.MirandaEDIT: Added "(m)" to subject line

I knew I heard it before but couldn't place it. Then I looked it up in the dictionary. Yikes. Um, I guess it works if they wanna name their other children Gunner and the like.

It reminds me of "ktana", "little" in Hebrew lol. Nmsaa...

The meaning "sword" would be one thing, but seeing as we use the same word "katana" in English, I think it's a bit off. Still, Katana is better than, say, Dagger or Sword.

Why does it make me think of a boat? NMSAA.

Hmm, Katana, I don't think its a nice name, with or without the meaning. It sounds very harsh.

I think it's nice sounding if you don't know the meaning, but a lot of people probably would, and that's ungood. - chazda
