No one is entirely sure where Narelle came from. The likelihood is that it's an adaptation of an Aboriginal name from the area south-west of Sydney (where there is also a town called Narellan). For some reason it appealed to the Australian ear and has been used pretty consistently for decades. I knew several growing up though I don't think it's been used much since the 80s.
