Betelgeuse was a movie back in the 80's, but I don't think as many people are familiar with it like when it first came out. Also, the list of star names is limited, so you'll probably have to 'reuse' some of the names, especially if you want people to be familiar with the names. You'll have to be careful, though that you don't copy those characters with your Betelgeuse, Bellatrix, Lyra, or any other starname you choose to use. Familiarity with those works might be helpful there.
I can't think of any stories that are man against propaganda, but it may be a bit man vs government (especially if that's where the propaganda is from). The Giver and We by Yevgenij Zamjatin, which are a bit more disutopian, might be in the same genre. Don't be afraid if you never heard of We.
