Yeah, I agree. Heck, *I* chafe at my life without having a different example to look at!
And if you read Victorian, Regency, and Georgian history, memoirs and some literature there is a huge undercurrent of female discontent and yearning for a better life, which increased throughout those time periods. A great many women really were *not* happy with their lot in life, despite having no/few examples of what an emancipated woman's life would look like.
