More unusual plant names... let's give it a try. :)
Okay, so we know that there are certain plant names which have a history of being used as first names, oftentimes for women. We can all think of a few examples, like the simple but overly common Rose or the simple but gentle Ivy... or old-fashioned and posh names like Gardenia and Petunia.But... personally, I feel like many of these are too known by now, making them seem a bit bland and meh to my ears. So, I started wondering... isn't there more than this, something more exciting? That's when I went on a quest for more unusual plant names. Plant names seem a little bit underfeatured at BtN still, so I went to Wikipedia and dug up more names from the plant world.A selection of them is featured below, and I am curious to hear whether there are any names among them that you like or love. I guess most of these names are suitable for a guilty pleasure list only (especially the ones that are quite a mouthful), but surely there are a few among them that you would like to see on a girl or a woman someday? If so, feel free to let us know which ones. ;)Virtually all names are of plant genera, with a few of subgenera as well. The majority of these names are of Greek origin etymologically, with a fair few Latin ones as well. A small number of them are derived from English surnames (since they were named after their discoverer), some of which surprised me by appearing and sounding more charming than I would have expected. Also, I made an effort to only list plant names that are not featured in the main database (yet), so that is why e.g. Calanthe, Crescentia, Primula, Prunella and Zinnia are absent from this list.Lastly, my own favourites are marked with an asterisk (*):* = "Hmm, (surprisingly) interesting!"
** = "Yeah, I like it."
*** = "Love it! I'd like to meet a girl or woman with that name someday."Alright, enough with the talking. ;) Here, finally, is the list! :DA

Wow. You've put a lot of work into this. Impressive. :-)I was in my SIL's kitchen about a week ago. The tiles around her backsplash are white with wildflowers / herbs on them, with the names as well. I felt so silly when I saw Artemisia on one of them. I only ever thought of Artemisia as an Italian renaissance painter. I never connected it to the plant. Suddenly it took on a whole new shine. Artemisia probably doesn't count for your purposes because it's already in the database. So from your list I'd say the most usable / desirable are:Zea, Yulania, Wisteria (thanks to some desperate types), Vestia, Ursinia (love it!), Thelaia, Salvinia, Russelia, Quintinia (cute), Patrinia, Odixia (Dixie!) / Oleandra (a tie), Nerine, Michelia (it looks like a trendy version of Michaela), Laurelia (pretty), Karinia, Jamesia, Ixia / Isandrina (a tie), Hesperantha, Gloriosa, Fortunella, Everistia (nn Ever?), Dianthera, Cassinia, Bassia and Aloysia (Aloisia). I almost added Harperia just for the nn Harper.Have you ever heard of Helianthe. I can't remember where I saw it but it's supposed to be the Greek for sunflower. Someone could totally be pulling my leg, though. Bonus points to any parent who names a kid Ypsilandra. (epsilon?)

Baptisiaaka False Indigo. I have one in front of my porch, it's just starting to come up. :) I thought of it for a name when my Grandma gave the plant to me and liked it. It has a cool religious thing going on too.I didn't look to see if it's in the list (probably), but I went through a brief Delphinium phase last year too. I liked it on a boy. Delphinium Algernon, what a dandy.I'd be interested to go through this whole list later, but don't have time now!

I think Mandragora was used in Harry Potter in reference to the mandrake roots, lol. Otherwise, interesting list! Lots of nice plant names on there. I probably wouldn't ever use them on a person, but a lot do sound pretty. My favorite is Rhodanthe. It's got such a rogue-ish beauty about it.

GloxiniaFTWI have always loved that name. I'd not use it except in a fantasy, but I think it is very neato.
