Beulah
Not exactly a BA but at my yard sale yesterday a young pregnant girl mentioned this was the name she had picked out for her daughter. I've normally always thought Beulah was pretty ugly but actually, after being forced to picture it on a little girl, I sorta like it. Opinions?

It's quite ugly, but I'd rather see a Beulah than another Nevaeh.I find it ironic that Beulah means "married" since the Hebrew word for virgin is "betulah" (similar to "Beulah"). The Arabic cognate of betulah is Batul.

Actually it blows my mind that BTNers aren't all over Beulah. I don't think it's bad. I don't like it a lot but I don't like B names in general, but I wouldn't have a bad reaction if I saw it on a child.Really confused about all the "it's dated" comments. Dated to when? The early 1900s? That's not "dated", that's "due for a comeback". ;)

The worst name that didn't get produced in some name chop shop. It's just terrible.

I think it'd be a fabulous name for a dog.

Just the sound of Beulah makes me think of retching. I've never liked it. I never will like it.

I sort of like Beulah. It has that "pretty-ugly" vibe going on. I know it's a name that appears several times in my SIL's family tree, even on children born recently (as a mn). They're Mormon, though, and I think Beulah has special meaning for them.

Sorry, but I don't find it attractive at all. It sounds like "bugle".

I suspect (hope) this girl was kidding. Beulah. Honestly.I've said a lot of names are servant names to me, but Beulah is the queen of servant names. I picture Beulah as a maid in some crummy 1940's movie, a big black maid in a uniform and her head tied up in a kerchief, going around saying "Lawsy, Miss Kate!" and rolling her eyes and wringing her hands. Ugh.

In the USA this association is linked to a particular television show that probably aired before most people who post on this board were born. Interesting how long some of these associations last:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042081/http://www.museum.tv/eotvsection.php?entrycode=beulah

Naw she was going on about how she liked that its meaning had to do with being between life and death / heaven and hell. And don't know where she got that information since all I knew was that it meant "married" but she seemd totally serious. I considered that I misheard her when she said the name but it definitely sounded like Beulah and couldn't think of any other names that sounded similar or fit the description. She was a roller derby girl so I wasn't all that surprised in that Beulah has this sort of "rock-a-billy" vibe that I sometimes get from roller girls, in general

The "between heaven and hell" thing is from The Pilgrim's Progress, I think. Beulah was a sort of magical, mystical land of peace described as being between heaven and hell.

Beulah Land, yes! I have a vague remembrance of hymns mentioning this.(I know a lot of hymns!)

Ah, ok that makes more sense now. Thanks for the info!

Beulah is just one of these names most people dismiss straight off. Unfortunately, I'm one of these people. You could introduce me to the nicest, most charming, most interesting Beulah on Earth and I'd still think it's an ugly name. By extention, I don't think there's any history, any bearer, any meaning or any association which can make me overlook the sound, which I think is simply ugly.

I don't get the hate for Beulah, I think it's cute :)

Yeah I get that it sounds a bit dated, but I don't really think it's that gross sounding - it's got the uber popular '-la' ending... and I think B is a cute nn possibility

Ugh. I still think it's pretty ugly. It feels dated to me.

I think it's absolutely adorable! BYOO-la. Naww. I can't see why everyone else seem to think it's so ugly.

I know, especially since '-la' endings seem to be popular, like Lila, Isla, Mila, Kayla, Ella, Bella/Isabella, etc. I guess the "BYOO" is too much for people?

I don't like it. It's just ugly looking and sounding. It makes it worse to picture a little girl named Beulah. Can you imagine looking down at your baby and calling it Beulah?

Sorry, I still hate it. It sounds like the sound you make when you barf: "BEULAH!!!"
