This is one of my favorite French names. I have a really close friend with this name - he's the same age as me. However, another French user (luxsword) claimed that this name is "very rare", which surprised me since I know several guys with this name (all but one are under 30), and it's in the top 500 names.
Do you think Léandre sounds ridiculous? What about on a non-French person?

Why would it sounds ridiculous? I don't get it. There are tons of Leo- variants of there, including Leonie, Leander, Léandre, Leandro etc. I quite like Léandre.

Hmmm. Are you French? Does the person's comment surprise you because Léandre is in the top 500 in France, or somewhere else? I'm slightly confused...
But anyway, I am not French although I do speak the language a little. I don't think Léandre sounds ridiculous when said in French sentence, but pronouncing Léandre correctly in an English sentence is kind of weird to me. So changing Léandre to Leander when speaking English might sound better?
If the person was neither French or living in a French-speaking country, I'd probablyy go for Leander.

Her comment did surprise me. I noticed that she complains about a lot of the fancier French names. Probably the harshest comment was given to the name Auguste, which she says is "not given anymore" (yet I know a 4-year-old with the name).
