Nicolaas John vs Nicolaas Gordon
As I said in my previous topic, I'm expecting another little boy in December and I'm still looking for a middle name for him. I want to use a family name, and my husband and I have narrowed it down to two. At the moment I'm having an internal fight over each name combination.Nicolaas John ****erThis flows with our older son's middle name (Adriaan James) and is very simple and classic imo, I like it but still ...Nicolaas Gordon ****erI love this name, and some might tell me to go with my heart's instinct. I'd rather know what people would think if they came across a baby with either. Also, wdyt about: Nicolaas John Gordon ****er or Nicolaas Gordon John ****er or even Nicolaas Eugene ****er?DS#1 Adriaan James (Arie) 12 June 2010
Exp. DS#2 Nicolaas _____ (Kai) December 2014

I vote for Nicolaas Gordon. I like the sound of it, it's more interesting and Gordon is spunky and underused.I also think Nicolaas Eugene sounds fine, although I do not care for Eugene at all.Congrats on the new baby!

I think Nicolaas Gordon is the more striking name. Usually, I would prefer two middle names but I don't think Gordon and John go well together. What about Nicolaas Gordon Eugene?

I like Nicolaas John better than Nicolaas Gordon, but if you like Nicolaas Gordon better than I think you should use that one! It still flows and everything. But I love Nicolaas Eugene most of all. I like how the g is soft.

All three are great, including Nicolaas Eugene!I would just pick the one that you feel most drawn to or wait till he's born and see which one seems to fit him the best.

My vote still goes to Nicolaas Gordon. Strong, solid, yet adorable combo. I like John, but I don't think it goes nearly so well with Nicolaas as Gordon does. If I met a baby with the combo Nicolaas John, then I'd think it was a nice name, no complaints, but nothing to write home about, either. If I met one named Nicolaas Gordon, I'm not sure if I could stop complimenting the name to the parents. I'm not completely sure why, but Nicolaas Gordon just seems like one of those rare "perfect" combos to me. Very nice.

Yeah, some might tell you to go with your heart's instinct, but I am not one of them. Nicolaas John sounds better than Nicolaas Gordon, and it matches your other son's name without being TOO matchy-matchy. Use it.

I would choose Nicholaas John. Especially if the last name is two syllables -- the meter pleases me to have one name with three syllables, one with one, and then one with two. I dig the contrasting lengths.Nicholaas Gordon is acceptable, but not as dazzling as the other choice for me.

Nicolaas Gordon John would be my choice, but I'd definitely go with Gordon. It's so stylish, and also somewhat Scottish like James. (I know semi=Scottish brothers who are James and Douglas, but James's mn is Gordon.)My friend's ln is Gordon. She's a Jew and they'd always assumed that Gordon was just picked at random by or for some long-ago immigrant; but it seems that after 1745 a lot of Scotsmen left for Europe and joined foreign armies. One of them, a Mr Gordon, ended up in Russia where he married a Jewish lady and presumably converted - there probably weren't that many Scottish Jews in the 18th century! Knowing that has made Gordon much more interesting to me.
