I think many people were probably sickened at the immorality that one baby can be born into such privilege, from birthright alone, when 1/3 of babies born in the UK in the present times are born into poverty.
Then when it was announced that the cost of refurbishing the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge's apartment at Kensington Palace had more than doubled, there was another spike in membership.
It will take a long time to get there, it won't happen in any of our lifetimes, but will it happen one day.

The problem with ending the monarchy imo is the paparazzi. The royals could adjust to the daily grind, but the media will never leave them alone.
