Miranda has that lovely Shakespearean association, which trumps Old Fruity Hat; Amanda has gazillions of interchangeable Mandy people. Can't place the reference - some play or other, Noel Coward I think - but the sophisticated main character is Amanda. Someone young and ditzy turns up and gushes and says "I shall call you Mandy!", and gets the icy reply "Yes, I suppose you will". There aren't many who'd risk naming an ordinary daughter Miranda in countries where randy = oversexed. You need to be super-wealthy but invisible to journalists. I'd only consider it as a mn.

Ah, I wasn't understanding all of the Randi comments until your post. I did know about the word randy, but it's not in use where I live really. Randy would just be a tomboyish nickname here.
