I like Zephan.
I think Zephaniah is totally usable, so it doesn't NEED modernizing, but Zephan would be a good direction. I would tell people it is a short version of Zephaniah though, otherwise they will initially think it made-up.
However, it's a cool name - and you know that whether it's Zephaniah or Zephan... people will call him Zeph (totally in favor of this).
