Calvin - how popular will it get?
Calvin is one of our top names for our next baby (assuming boy). We've been considering it for a few years, but until recently I had thought it was a very obscure name. Obscure, but known names are my favorite names to use. I've only met one guy in my life who was named Calvin and went by it. Now I see it popping up all over the place, receiving very favorable reactions. And it's gone up in popularity over the past few years. So now I am nervous to use it. I'd rather not use it and find myself surrounded by five or six other little Calvins in a year or two. Any thoughts on this name? Do you think it will continue to rise or stay close to where it is now?

I know a 2 year old Calvin. I don't know any others besides the Calvin and Hobbs strip. I doubt it will get terribly popular.

Honestly it's nothing to worry about. Calvin isn't even in the top 150, and most names don't increase that rapidly.

That's my 20 year old brother's name. I can't imagine it getting absurdly popular (even if it's starting to climb), and it's easy to spell and uncommon without being unheard of. Kind of funny that it means bald though. :b

I don't like Calvin. To me it's way too dated. (How about Callum??)I looked at that popularity stats. You're right, it does look like it's going up a bit in the last few years. But it actually looks like it's been pretty steady over the longer term. Honestly, I have no idea whether it'll go up or down. I don't think it's popular enough to be worried about, though.

This depends on where you are from. In the US, yeah... it's climbing the charts, but not really fast. It's a well known name, but not something that people usually think to use. I have never actually met a Calvin in my life (one of the reasons that I like it). My guess is that it is most popular in the midEastern US (i.e. Michigan) where Calvin college is, and where the Calvinist denomination is a big influence. People there are using it as a religious name. In the rest of the US though - it's just a sweet underused name. I suggest you visit the social security website and search the popularity by your state (if you live in the US). Or... let us know your state and I can check for you.
I would totally recommend still using Calvin though. Great name.

Thank you for the tip! Calvin is apparently not too widespread in our state (yet). I got a little paranoid when I found out an acquaintance was planning to use it for a middle name.

It's been not, popular, but used fairly steadily (10-12 babies per year) in BC since the early 90's. I don't think it will see the same popularity as Aidan or Connor but it is becoming popular in certain crowds. I think it depends on the type of namers you are around.
