Why do people hate Mandy?
When I asked about Amanda, I noticed a lot of people dislike the NN Mandy, and I'm wondering why. I don't think it's that bad. Anyone care to explain? Also, if you *had* to name your daughter Mandy, what would you pair it with? Would you ever use her first name, or would you always use her middle name? I don't like Amanda at all, and I'd normally say I hate the nn Mandy too... but, well, since I basically shredded my arm, I've met so many nice Mandys! One of my favourite nurses was called Manda, and the other was called Mandy. My back-to-work lady (the lady who supervises how I can go back to work and how my workplace can help me with my injury) is called Mandy and she is super lovely. I can't say I like the name, but I now have this positive impression of the name. Most of the Mandys I've met so far have been very sensible but also very nice and kind, friendly and level-headed... kind of makes the name seem so much better!

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with Mandy. It's just dated. I knew quite a few of them in school although I do know one Mandy who is around 20 today (real name, Amanda Jane). The name works for her and doesn't seem out of place. Still it is most definitely NMS.If I had to call my dd Mandy, I'd name her Miranda and then slowly wean her to the full name. ;-)

I don't like Amanda that much - prefer Miranda - but it totally outshines the drab and whiney Mandy. I knew a family with a tradition of A- names, and the only daughter was Amanda but she became Mandy within days, though her brothers Anthony and Angus have never been Tony or Gus. Which is odd.Perhaps there's just too big a gap between the firmly Latinate Amanda, with associations of exclusive schooling, and the firmly down-market Mandy? Or perhaps it's just that when Amanda was fashionable the miniskirt was at its height and all the Mandy people had bouffant hair, Cleopatra eye makeup, a penchant for pot and were never happier than when waving their knickers at the Beatles! But it goes further. In Private Lives, silly-little-second-wife Sybil meets her predecessor Amanda and tries to ingratiate herself: "I shall call you Mandy!", to which sleek, sophisticated Amanda drawls: "Yes, I suppose you will" in tones of resignation. And that was the early 30s, surely? As for naming my daughter Mandy ... well, DH's uncle by marriage had a nephew named Mandeville who was known as Mandy! He changed it to Carl as soon as he was legally able, and it had been a family name rather than a parental choice, but one did sympathise with the poor bloke.

Mandy is sweet and wholesome although perhaps unsurprising and normal like Jessica, Jennifer, Amanda, Megan, Stephanie, etc. Mandy does seem slightly more tomboyish and fun compared to Amanda. The song "Mandy" in "White Christmas" gives the name a bit of spice.

I'm more less indifferent to Mandy. Would I ever use it? No. Do I immediately think badly of someone with this name? No. I've met good people named Mandy as well as bad ones. I think that one of the biggest problems is how wildly popular the name used to be, especially in the 80s and 90s. There's a lot of girls out there who are named or nicknamed Mandy. I think TV, movies, and books did a lot for demonizing Mandy because a character by that name was usually ditzy, snarky, spoiled, mean, rude, or just plain obnoxious. Well that's just my take on it. I hope that helps explain the anit-Mandy movement lol.If I had to name my daughter Mandy... Um... I'd definitely put it as her middle name and call her by her first name but right now I can't think of anything to go with it.

The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy kind of ruined the name for me. Mandy was a selfish, evil little jerk. I have a cousin named Amanda "Mandy", but we're not very close so the GAoBaM Mandy is still the first one to come to mind.Mandy Jocasta, then I could call her MJ, which I think is adorable.

I like Mandy. If I had to name my daughter Mandy I would name her Mandy Beatrice.

If you like Mandy... You're probably going to feel a bit confused / upset / offended by this post. Just a warning. :)
I just don't like it. It feels skinny and bitchy, but simultaneously dated. Not saying all Mandys are like that, in fact the only Mandy I know is lovely. But it's not nice at all to me. The noise sounds raw and unpleasant, taking everything nice out of Amanda (and IMO, there wasn't much nice in it). If I had to use it, I would load it with prettiness all around- Iole Mandy Jeanne-Marie, or Mandy Clementine Anna, or Rhiannon Sylvia Mandy. I still wouldn't like it. If I had to use it as a first name, yes, I think I'll stick with Mandy Clementine Anna. I'd probably use Cleo myself, but I wouldn't mind if others called her Mandy. Maybe I'd call her Mandy-Clee on days when I wasn't feeling particularly repulsed or offended by the name.

I can't, because I don't get it either. I like Mandy, it's cute and friendly and spunky. As for the middle name I would pair with it, I like Mandy Ramona.

I actually like Mandy, and very much dislike Amanda. Amanda is plodding and heavy and dated, in my opinion. I wouldn't consider using Mandy, really, but I like it enough. It does remind me of Andy Pandy, though, which was a children's television show in the UK (not sure if it aired anywhere else) - if you google it, he looks mortifying, but I grew up with an updated and less terrifying version of him.Mandy Josephine Wren. Sure, I'd use her first name.

I like the name of the snake on the show: Missy Hissy. That's cute. :)

I wish that people would allow more respect for a person's name - and for a person's ideas. With the name "Barbara" I involuntarily receive numerous nick-names, and was teased with the name Barbie before and throughout my elementary years. I learned to like Barbie, I merely dislike being called "Barb". I do not find anything strange in an unfavorable way about Amanda or Mandy, which are actually beautiful names. Oh and to the other responder, Vicky is quite exotic, like my name and like me!

I don't like Mandy because in comparison with Amanda, which I think is a beautiful and pretty much timeless name, Mandy seems so lackluster and babyish. It's not a nn that ages gracefully like Jenny can, or Kate. Mandy is more like Nikki or Becca that way.If I *had* to name a daughter Mandy, I would leave her on somebody's doorstep explaining the problem and saying that while I couldn't get out of the obligation, they could and should name her something else. lol

I dislike names like Mandy, Vicky, Becky and Miranda for example just because when I was young, the cartoons I watched always had a "villainous" or "mean girl" character with a name like that. It's a very petty reason but I can't help it!Mandy Harmonia sounds like a nice combo. I don't know why. I wouldn't call her Mandy, ever.

I like VickiSpelled that way. I think it's lively and not babyish the way I think Mandy is.
