Inspired by Billina's thread...
Am I the only one who dislikes Lyra?Like, uuurgghhh, I can't get into this name at all. Yes, I know it has connections to the stars, and music, and Greek mythology, and His Dark Materials - all lovely and good. But I still don't find this name pretty at all.So... enlighten me. Explain to me why I'm wrong. Heh. those were days of roses...

It's just a matter of personal taste. Every name has at least one person who dislikes it.I don't really like the name Lyra either. I think it's overrated. I'm not that big on astronomy names, and Lyra is also pretty close to Lira, which is a common surname in Brazil. (It's also the name of the mint green pony on MLP: FIM, Lyra Heartstrings, and that show's fanbase is awful.) I don't like His Dark Materials either.

I like the name (just in a casual way-not enough to obsess over it. A name I have no problem with but most likely will never name one of my kids that)If you don't like the name, don't worry about it. We all have our own tastes and opinions and how many names are out there? A ton (litterly)
There are some well loved names that I can't personally wrap my head around. Many people seem to like the names of: Madison, Poppy, Paisley, Ruby, Lola, McKenzie \Mackenzie (I personally dislike\hate them or can't take them very seriously \:

I can't make people like a name.

I don't exactly hate Lyra, but it reminds me of the word leer and that does put me off the name. I like the way Lyra looks and its meaning, though.

I honestly don't really care one way or the other about Lyra. It's one of those names where I'm just like...meh. It's a name. It's fine, I guess.

It's pronounced like "lira" , the old Italian currency, so, yeah, it sounds a bit odd to me.

I can think of about at least 5 different pronunciations, none of which are appealing.

L names are a challenge for me. Lyra, I've never seen in real life, but it would be distracting.

I don't like it either.

You're not wrong at all. I have a love/hate relationship with the name. When I first discovered the name, I very much hated it. While I know how it's supposed to be pronounced, for me, I think I'd like it pronounced lear-ah so that the first part rhymes with "we're".

You are not alone. I think Lyra is super annoying because she thinks she's all that with her mythological and astrological associations and her spelling where y is not a trendy addition to the name. Blech.

Bahahahaha, I love this. For all the lovely assosiations it's a really rank name. Hah.

Eugh.
I want to love Lyra. I reaaalllly, reaaaally want to like it. I spent ages telling myself I did, but the truth is... I just don't get along with it. I try to force myself to like it, but when I really think about it I don't.I think it's the connections. It has such a pretty background and meaning and it looks beautiful on paper. When you say it aloud, it just sounds so wishy-washy and lame. It feels like it should be this pretty, powerful name but it's just... a bit of a limp-handshake of a name. Maybe it's doomed by association but it just doesn't have the personality and spark it's set up to have, if that makes sense.I mean, it just scrapes into OK territory for me. Plus, I don't like the lye/lie sound at the beginning, but I kinda like Lysander so, erm, I dunno... I guess Lysander's a bit wimpy too. It's just wimpy. And despite a rich heritage it feels so nothing-y (Lyra, not so much Lysander)I mean, there are so many more four-letter L names with presence and personality - Lisa, Leah, Lara, Lena, Lina, Leda, Lila, Leto, Lumi... I can't say I like them all or that they're great names, but they have so much more flavour and presence than Lyra, which somehow seems so interesting and turns out so disappointing and boring. The only thing I can say about it is that it's slightly less boring and annoying than Luna.

Yes. I completely agree it's one of those names that you have to tell yourself that you like because everyone else does. 'Limp handshake' is perfect - I don't even think it looks that nice on paper.Actually my main association would have to be the pencil brand.I feel Lyra is becoming the new Luna - which has a more attractive sound anyway - in that the parents want something fantasy-like and unique but can't really think of anything beyond that. And for what it's worth I happen to also really dislike Lumi. There's no pleasing me, ha.

I like Lyra. Not enough to use, but I do like it, because I am fond of both Greek myth and star names. I guess the main reasons I wouldn't use it are because it seems to be getting a bit trendy lately and because it'd remind people in the brony circles too much of Lyra Heartstrings. Heh.I prefer Cyra in terms of sound, and I like Vega much more than Lyra, if we're going to do astronomical names.

I like it, but it's still not on my favorite list, and it's because it makes me think of Swedish slang for being drunk, "vara på lyran". It literary means "being on the lyre" and apparently it's derived from an old inn outside Stockholm which was called Lyran (The Lyre).

Nope.I don't think Lyra is a pretty name because I can't get past the "lie" at the beginning. Also, it sounds like something a snooty douchebag would name their kid.
