My husband's sister Shannon and her husband Glenn welcomed their second child today.
Kira Jocelyn joins Robert Cameron, who is 18 months old.
Not totally sure that's how the middle name is spelled, but I'm pretty sure.
Kira is from the title of a book Shannon loves called "Kira Kira." Apparently in the book, kira is a Japanese word that means something like sparkly or special.
I think, therefore I judge.

Kira is a lovely name, and sounds great with Jocelyn. Coincidentally, I have a cousin named Kyra, pronounced the same as this name.

Very nice. Kira is such a beautiful, underused name. Alsoo, Kira-Kira is one of my own all time favorite books!

It's okay. Not bad or anything, but nothing I'd use. Just sounds (even if it isn't really, just sounds to me) insubstantial. Like Kara. According to this site, Kira can be a Russian feminine form of Cyrus, and I'd prefer to think of it that way than Japanese for "sparkly" or "special." I don't like Jocelyn, it's heavy and unfeminine. But congrats.

Kira is Persian, and a feminine form if Cyrus, I thought. I might have to double check. I always thought Kyra was pretty. While Kira Jocelyn is not my normal style, I do think it is a nice, solid combo with good sounds and balance.

Looking at data from namaejiten.com, which provides popularity data from 1989-2003, Kira (綺羅) was given to 10 girls and 3 boys in 2003.
In total, 65 girls and 19 boys were given the name with these particular kanji from that period, which makes it a fairly recent yet uncommon name.
Though きらきら is not really given to girls in Japan (obviously).
That brings me to this...
If Shannon gave birth to a boy and named him Kira, how would you feel about it, especially when she uses the same combo?

She wouldn't. Of that I am posititve. In the US Kira/Keira/Kyra are strictly female names. To name a boy Kira would be like naming a girl Robert. It Is Simply Not Done.
