I like the idea of it as a first name. It doesn't feel formal enough for me; although it certainly worked for Mae West and Mae Jemison and I wouldn't bat an eye if I saw it as a given name. I really like it as a nickname for Maeva or Maylis.
I strongly prefer Mae. Mae feels like a name to me, while May still feels like a word to me.
