I've seen quite a few little Masons in my area, even, and it's 98.%French-speaking.
Mason is a surname! (I know, of course, that you know). But perhaps people where I live don't know, they've just heard the name.
Oddly(sarcasm here) , I see no new-borns named Bellavance, or Daigle, or Pelletier. (all very common surnames where I live.)
