HOW DID I MISS THIS?Are you pronouncing it like this? Because I'm reading your typed pronunciation differently than I say it.
(Just ignore the surname part. https://forvo.com/word/ro/silviu_bindea/) SEEL-vih-OO. Slight second syllable still there.Regardless, I LOVE THIS NAME. As you can see below, it's in my Top Ten. Silvio is almost tied with it, but this one eeks out just slightly higher. I'm American and I don't have a problem with it, but I've also been learning Romanian for almost a year now so it may come easier to me than others.
I don't think I would let a common misread hinder me from loving/using something.I know in Romania that this is an old name that isn't really used on young people, but to my foreign ears, it's absolutely lovely.

I really like it because all names derived from the Latin silva ("forest") enchant me. That said, I prefer the Italian Silvio.

It can be safely assumed that there will be almost certainly problems with the correct pronunciation, so as not to say certain confusion might occur with the similar names, which you mentioned. According to my information the common pronunciation of Silviu is Zil-vee-OO (the OO as in Ute-OO-teh)Whereas the Italian Silvio as known, Zil-vee-o, Silvia, Zil-vee-ah, Silvius, Zil-vee-ooss

Actually..Hi Ariane !!!Actually in Italy both Silvia and Silvio are pronounced with S (like in 'sun').

Ciao Rossana,Lo so, abbiamo la stessa pronuncia. Ho usato solo la spiegazione da qui per i nostri co-autori di lingua inglese, probabilmente non era così ben presa.Ti auguro un buon fine settimana, ci vediamo presto, stammi bene!

Hi foxgloves !!!Silviu?
I figure a very serious and strick businessman in his 40s.I much prefer other Romanian names...
Mircea
Adrian
Tudor
Traian
Radu
Mihai
Iulian
Vlad
ŞtefanIf you like instead the -u ending I much prefer Iuliu, Petru or Alexandru to it.Yes I think that few people in the English-speaking world would recognize it.Here in Italy is different because we have the largest community of Romanians out of Romania so we are quite skilled with this kind of names (also because many of them are very close i.e. Silviu Romanian and Silvio Italian).Anyway if you like the sound I suggest you Silvan which is simple and enough different to Silvia / Sylvia to be not confused with it.
