In love and trouble
There are some names in this book (by Alice Walker) that are really unusual and I was wondering if anyone had any info on them. The characters are based on 'black women in rural South America' in the 30's (I think). I'm presuming they have African origins (?)Rannie Mae Toomer (female, Mae is mn Toomer is sn)
Snooks (male, baby)
Daughter (female, ?!)
Ruel (male)Thanks :)perse

Rannie could be from Miranda, or a feminised form of Randolph. Snooks is just the standard affectionate meaningless term used to chat up babies, surely? And , yes, Reuel for Ruel. Are you sure about the rural South America bit? Shouldn't it be the rural Southern United States?

I think Ruel is a misspelling of Reuel, but I really don't know about the others... :)Claire
